Scotties come up short at Mount Pleasant, 35-11
Southmoreland needed a victory at Mount Pleasant and loss by Waynesburg Central to visiting Derry to reach the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs out of the Interstate Conference.
Both ends of the equation went the wrong way for the Scotties, though, as they fell to the Vikings, 35-11, and the Raiders defeated the Trojans.
Jake Pisula was a bright spot for Southmoreland (4-5, 4-4) with 157 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Southmoreland hung tough into the second quarter, trailing 7-0 thanks to a 59-yard touchdown pass by MP’s Johnny Yester to L.J. Sutton.
The Vikings (7-2, 7-1), who finished second in the conference, put up three more scores before halftime, however.
Touchdown runs of 86 yards by Trevoer Salopek and 1 yard by Chris Wagner followed by Sutton’s second TD catch from Yester, this one from 28 yards out, made it 28-8 Vikings.
Yester completed four of 10 passes, all to Sutton, for 101 yards with a pair of TDs and one interception. Salopek rushed for 108 yards on just four carries.
Zach Berdar, who was six for six in extra-point kicks, booted a 28-yarfd field goal in the third quarter to put Mount Pleasant up 31-0.
Kyle Halterman added scoring runs of 40 and 24 yards in the fourth quarter to put the hosts up 45-0.
Southmoreland averted the shutout when Pisula broke free for an 85-yard touchdown run and Jaden Datz ran in the two-point conversion.
