Charles B. Stoy Jr.
Charles B. “Pete” Stoy Jr., age 88, of Allentown, formerly of Waynesburg, died Thursday, July 30, 2015 in his home.
He was born October 26, 1926 in Uniontown, a son of the late Charles B. Stoy Sr. and Florence O’Neal Stoy.
Mr. Stoy graduated from high school in 1944 and went immediately to the U.S. Navy. He served aboard a destroyer in the Atlantic until June 1945, and then aboard a seagoing tug as a member of its first crew, with duty mostly in the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
He enrolled in Waynesburg College in 1946 and graduated in the spring of 1950 with a B.S. in business administration. Upon graduation he began working in Uniontown as a debit agent for Prudential Insurance Co. He was promoted to staff manager in 1955.
Mr. Stoy began working as Finance Director at Waynesburg College in 1959. He was promoted to Vice president of Business and Finance in 1963. In that capacity he established the college accounting system as recommend by college and university accounting, set-up a fringe benefit system, and wrote the manual for procedures in purchasing. Mr. Stoy also organized the building and grounds department including a system for work requests. He supervised the financial operations of auxiliary enterprises at the college and headed -up planning and financing of the new residence halls and academic buildings, acting as college liaison with architects and construction companies. He retired on June 30, 1988 and was named a member of the Paul R. Stewart Society on October 16, 1998.
His public service included: heading a neighborhood task force to promote economic opportunity in Greene County, serving as a director of the Greene County Branch of the Pennsylvania Economy League from 1965 to 1985, serving on the board of governors of the Greene County Country Club 1975 to 1988, and as President of the Greene County Country Club in 1988. He served on the Board of Directors of Washington-Greene Community Action- Neighborhood Business Council Project 1988 to 1991 and was named citizen of the year by Washington-Greene Community Action in 1990.
Mr. Stoy was a 32nd degree mason and a member of Laurel Lodge No. 651 F.& A.M., Union Royal Arch Chapter No. 165, Uniontown Commandery No. 49 of the Knights Templar, and Syria Temple. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Scottish Rite Valley of Uniontown in 1993.
On December 20, 1947 he married Jane Montgomery Stoy, who died October 11, 2000.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen S. Guthrie of Allentown and Rebecca S. Wilson (Gary) of Waynesburg; one son, Charles B. Stoy III of Tampa, Florida; four grandchildren, Stephanie Guthrie, Gary J. Wilson Jr., Kristopher O. Wilson, and Catherine A. Stoy; 5 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas H. Stoy of Melbourne, Florida.
Deceased are his step-mother, Mildred N. Stoy, a son-in law, Joel Guthrie; and a sister, who died in infancy.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High St., Waynesburg, where services will be held at 11: 00 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, 2015 with Rev. William Parker officiating followed by interment in Greene Mount Cemetery, Waynesburg, with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 330 and the U.S. Navy. Laurel Lodge No. 651 will hold Masonic services at 7 p.m. Monday the funeral home.
