Central Greene school board approves agreement with borough

WAYNESBURG — Unfortunately, it is a sign of the times.

The Central Greene school board Tuesday approved a formal sounding recommendation called a school resource officer agreement with Waynesburg Borough, which will put a borough police officer into the elementary, middle and high school on a rotating basis.

The officer will have the powers and authority of a sworn municipal police officer and will be permitted to function within the limits of the borough and the school district.

School district solicitor Kirk King said the reason for including the wording of “territorial limits” of the school district is because the elementary and high schools are in Franklin Township.

“This is the first time we will have a police officer in our school buildings,” King said. “The scheduling has yet to be worked out, however,” he said.

In preparation for the start of classes Monday, the board also addressed a host of personnel matters.

Ashley Deurlein was hired as a guidance counselor at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School; a part-time after-school dinner cook position was created; and Charles Cook and John Garber were hired to fill the vacant after-school security positions at the high school and middle school, respectively.

Dave Fowler and Natalie Blair were hired as seventh-and-eighth-grade head girls and assistant girls basketball coaches, respectively; Debra Ramey was hired as a health room assistant at the middle school; and Ryan Hurd was hired as seventh-and-eighth-grade assistant boys soccer coach.

The board eliminated the lunch and bus aide position at the middle school and created a 2 1/4-hour lunch aide position at the middle school.

In several financial matters, the board set $100 as the daily rate paid to professional staff substitutes and $115 to Central Greene School District retirees; established the rate of $9 an hour for part-time crossing guards; set $8.75 as the hourly rate paid to support staff and crossing guard substitutes; and approved an agreement negotiated between West Virginia University and the school district for athletic trainer services.

The agreement calls for the continuation of three graduate level trainers, each working up to 20 hours a week from Aug. 1, 2015, through May 31, 2016, at an annual cost of $53,785.88.

The board also approved paying $159,405 to Advent Communication Systems for the new updated phone system in the district.

In other business, the board:

n Accepted the resignations of Brian Knapp as varsity head boys soccer coach and Charles Kiger as varsity assistant football coach.

n Approved an agreement with Eric Ryan Corp. to review the district’s utility and telecommunication billing for 12 months.

n Approved student and faculty handbooks for the elementary, middle and high schools.

n Approved an agreement with Greene County Human Services for the Student Assistance Liaison (SAP) during the 2015-16 school year.
