Mechanical failure closes Waynesburg waterpark

WAYNESBURG — An unexpected mechanical issue at the Alpha Aquatic Community Center and Waterpark in Waynesburg has resulted in the park’s closing for the remainder of the 2015 swimming season.

The waterpark was originally scheduled to be open this week and closed the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 4 as local students returned to school. The facility would then reopen for the Labor Day holiday weekend and officially close for the season Monday, Sept. 7.

However, due to the mechanical failure, the Greene County Department of Recreation has made the decision to close the pool early. Department director Jake Blaker said Wednesday that the pool’s main circulation pump burned up on Sunday, disconnecting power to the pool.

“It was fried to a crisp,” he said. “It was just simply a matter of natural wear and tear.”

Blaker said a new pump was ordered, but will not arrive until next week, not enough time to fill the pool for the Labor Day weekend.

“We still need the new pump to shut the pool down, but by the time it arrives we just wouldn’t be able to have the pool up and running in time for the holiday weekend,” he said. Blaker said it will cost the department $5,500 to replace the pump.

Other county pools, Carmichaels Pool and Mon View Pool in Greensboro, both closed for the season Saturday, Aug. 15.
