James N. Stockdale

James N. Stockdale, 78, of Luray, Virginia, formerly of Greene County, died Tuesday, December 15, 2015, in Montvue Comfort Care Nursing Home, Luray, as a result of a cancer-related illness.

He was born March 21, 1937, in Jefferson, a son of the late Fred and Mildred Robb Stockdale.

Mr. Stockdale was a member of Luray United Methodist Church.

He was a 1955 graduate of Jefferson-Morgan High School.

Prior to his retirement in 1992, Mr. Stockdale was employed by the former Alltel Corp. for 33 years as a lineman in Waynesburg, Ohio and Alabama.

He was a resident of Virginia since 1994.

Mr. Stockdale enjoyed restoring antique oil lamps and clocks.

On December 8, 1975, he married Shirley Y. Wright, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, James S. and wife Barbara Stockdale of Jefferson; a daughter, Holly Dayich of Pennsylvania; three stepchildren, Winifred Pierson of Luray, Doug Bruce of Charleston, W.Va., and Deborah and husband Al Penska of Graysville; a sister, Donna Howes of Salisbury, Maryland; three grandchildren, Joshua Stockdale and twins Annie and Nicholas Dayich; six step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Robert Stockdale, and a brother, Edgar Stockdale.

Mr. Stockdale requested that his remains be donated to Humanities Gift Registry in the state of Virginia. All services will be held at the convenience of the family.
