Verl E. Dawson Jr.
Verl E. Dawson Jr., 68, of Carmichaels, died Saturday, December 26, 2015.
He was born May 15, 1947, in Uniontown, a son of the late Verl E. Dawson Sr. and Naomi Fullem Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was a graduate of Fairchance-Georges High School Class of 1965 and Penn State University Fayette Campus as part of the first graduating class in June 1967.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a sergeant from 1969 to 1978.
Mr. Dawson started his career with U.S. Steel at Robena Mine. With its closing, he moved to Cumberland Mine from where he retired after 33 years of employment. He was a strong supporter of United Mine Workers of America Local 2300, for which he served as treasurer for many years.
On December 21, 1968, he married his wife of 46 years, Judith Ann Cooper Dawson. She passed away March 17, 2015.
Surviving are his two children, Marie Ryan and husband Darien Carmichaels and Mark Dawson and wife Karen Martinsburg, and seven grandchildren, Brandon, Garrett, David, Christian, Jacob, Emily and Zachary.
The family will greet friends and family from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Thursday, December 31, in First Baptist Church, 17 North Morgantown Street, Fairchance, with the Rev. Peter Malik officiating. Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
