Landscape professional addresses Garden Club
Scott Tarris presented the program, “Landscaping Design,” to the members of the Town & Country Garden Club during the club’s recent meeting.
Elements of successful landscape design introduces basic art concepts: color, form, scale, texture and line (straight, curve, diagonal).
Two components of landscape design are: Softscape, which integrates plants and trees into the environment; and hardscape, which integrates items such as a patio, deck, water feature, sidewalk, wall or fence into the design.
The rule of one-third and two-thirds is followed in creating a design: One-third evergreen and two-thirds deciduous plantings.
The presentation featured the evolution of landscape design in the 1700s through the 1900s. Members viewed many designs, illustrations, and photos of formal and informal gardens.
“Creating designs that work for people and their life style is the purpose of landscape design,” Tarris said.
Tarris is a graduate of WVU with a degree in horticulture and is a master gardener at Country Farms Nursery, a professional design service, in Greensburg.
Special guests at the meeting were Douglas Kowalewski, and his parents Robert and Rita of Crucible. He is the club’s 2014 scholarship recipient. He has completed his first semester at Gettysburg College majoring in history and psychology. As a member of the Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble, he will be traveling to Istanbul, Italy and France this summer. He also plays tenor saxophone with the school’s wind symphony. Douglas is a graduate of Carmichaels Area High School.
