Rain Day races to be held July 25
WAYNESBURG — Rain Day celebrations will begin early on Saturday, July 25, with the 37th annual Rain Day Run/Walk 5K, sponsored by the Greene County Habitat for Humanity.
In addition to the 5K, there will also be a one mile Kids’ Fun Run for children ages 12 and under. Proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing housing options for those in need.
Registration for the races will be at 8:15 a.m. in the back parking lot of McCracken’s Pharmacy, located at 595 East High Street in Waynesburg. The Run/Walk 5K will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the Kids’ Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m.
Registration costs are $18 for the 5K registration and $12 for the Kid’s Fun Run.
Families are welcome to register as a team; each participating member of the team should fill out an application with the chosen team name. There is no additional fee for family teams, but team members are to be related by blood or marriage.
The applications for the 5K can be found in the Greene County Office Building, the Waynesburg Borough Office and the Habitat for Humanity office, or online at www.iplayoutside.com.
Applications are to be dropped off to Greene County Habitat for Humanity at 32 Church Street, Waynesburg, Pa. 15370 with checks made payable to Greene County Habitat for Humanity. Free t-shirts will be given to participants, pending the number of participants who register early.
Dawn Wood, office manager for Greene County Habitat for Humanity, explained that this year is going to be a little different than years past, with the appearance of a special guest.
“Clara Santucci, winner of this year’s and last year’s Pittsburgh Marathon, will be at the race,” Wood said.
Santucci, who hails from Dilliner, will start the race.
In addition to an appearance by Santucci, Wood added that awards will be given out to top runners, both overall and in each age group. All children will receive a ribbon for completing the Kids’ Fun Run. Additionally, the first 50 race participants who complete the Rain Day 5K will be granted free admission to the county’s Aquatic Center on the day of the race only for a post-race swim. The water park is located across from the county fairgrounds on Route 21.
Last year, $7,500 was raised through the Rain Day races, according to Wood. With enough community participation, the Rain Day 5K can be an even bigger success this year.
“Every registration helps Habitat for Humanity continue to address the housing needs in Greene County and helps to build a better community,” Wood said.
