Softball coach Tony Barbetta describes the anxiety he felt hoping he wouldn't let his girls down on their way to the WPIAL title. Barbetta and the team overcame the loss of assistant coach Chris Dugan to cancer during the playoffs to win the school's first ever WPIAL crown.

The Jefferson-Morgan softball team and the Chris Dugan family were honored at a ceremony hosted by state Rep. Pam Snyder, a graduate of Jefferson-Morgan.

The softball team compiled a 16-3 record and won the school’s first softball WPIAL championship with a 3-2 win over Chartiers-Houston. The team kept winning until a 1-0 loss to Cochranton in the PIAA quarterfinals.

It was a particularly emotional run for what became known as Team Dugan.

Chris Dugan was an assistant coach on the team and his daughter, Camryn Dugan, was the team’s second baseman.

Chris Dugan, 45, lost his battle with cancer on May 15, two days after the team’s first-round WPIAL playoff win over Western Beaver. His death came two weeks before the Lady Rockets’ historic win over Chartiers-Houston that brought home a WPIAL title.

Snyder presented the Dugan family, including Chris’s wife, Sherry Lynn Dugan, with a condolence resolution from the state House of Representatives.
