Rohanna slips down leaderboard

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna had three bogeys and only one birdie in Saturday’s third round of the inaugural Toyota Danielle Downey Classic as she slipped down the leaderboard after the third round.

The Waynesburg Central graduate started the day at 1-under 143 and tied for 35th, but closed the third round at 1-over 217 and tied for 48th heading into today’s fourth and final round. American Annie Park retained the top spot of the leaderboard after shooting 3-under 69 for a three-round total of 12-under 204.

The third round didn’t start until noon because of heavy rains overnight. Rohanna was supposed to go off at 9:14 a.m., but ended up teeing off No. 10 at 12:11 p.m. for a long day.

“I just didn’t have anything wild today. I had lots of 40-, 50-footers I wasn’t converting,” Rohanna said of her 2-over 74 in the third round. “My biggest problem was my irons.”

Rohanna started with a birdie on No. 10 in the first round and did the same on the par-5 in the third round. Unfortunately, she gave the stroke back with a bogey-6 on the the next hole.

As she had done in the first round, Rohanna then closed her first nine holes on the back nine with seven straight pars to go out in even-par 36.

Rohanna made the turn with a bogey-5 on No. 1 to go back to even par for the tournament, and the bogeyed No. 3, a par-3, to go to 1-over. She closed her third round with straight pars.

“I felt better about my wedges (after the second round) and the wedges actually hurt me,” said Rohanna.

Symetra Tour events are usually three-day tournaments, but the inaugural event at Brook-Lea Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., is a rare four-round tournament offering an increased purse of $150,000. According the Rohanna, the extra round is a good thing.

“I’m glad there’s a (fourth) day. I can make a little comeback,” said Rohanna. “I will take more aggressive lines to the pins. See if I can get a couple eagles on the par-5s.”
