Mary Murdock Hawkins, 95, of Waynesburg, died Saturday, July 25, 2015, at home surrounded by her loving husband and children.

She was born Monday, July 12, 1920 in Waynesburg, a daughter of the late Harry Murdock and Marian Washington Murdock. She was one of seven children.

Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of Waynesburg High School class of 1938 and attended Waynesburg College. She later studied music and voice in Pittsburgh. She was a soloist for the First United Methodist Church where she was a member and for 35 years was the choir director. Her church family was always very important to her.

Music was an important part throughout her school years and her life. She encouraged all four children to learn to play the piano and sing. The twins started singing duets in first grade and Jimmy joined to make a trio later. Adele completed the group to make a quartet. They sang mainly in church, local schools and social events. Because of her love of music, all four children and several grandchildren have joined various choruses and musical groups as adults.

Mary loved to paint local landscapes with oil paints for the sheer pleasure it brought her and her family. She enjoyed sewing outfits and costumes for her children. She also loved to knit and crochet. Playing Bridge was a true talent and enjoyment for her. She played in various card clubs throughout her life.

Working as a member of the Genealogy Museum and a supporter of the Rev. John Corbly Association was a focus during her life. She was passionate about local and family history.

Mrs. Hawkins was always a “farm girl” at heart. She would care for the many lambs or calves that needed help. She loved flower gardens and always canned vegetables. She loved living on the farm.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James Franklin Hawkins, whom she married on July 4, 1948 at her family farm.

Also surviving are four children, twins, Dora Lynne (Bob) Hornat, of Yorktown, Virginia and Lena Hawkins (Phil) Galing, of Waynesburg, James Murdock (Nancy) Hawkins of Bridgeport, West Virginia and Mary Adele (Paul) Naylor, of Oakland , Maryland; eight grandchildren, Sara A. (John) Bundy of Kentucky, Mary E. Hawkins of Nevada, James D. Hawkins of Texas, Bobby P. Hawkins of West Virginia, Brittany A. (Andrew) Raffin of Virginia, James A. Naylor and Heath L. Naylor both of Washington D.C. and Annika S. Naylor of Maryland; one great grandson, Henry Rex Bundy; one brother, Harry “Pete” (Donis) Murdock of Morgantown, West Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three sisters, Nellie Hannah, Virginia Wilcox, and Marie Murdock and two brothers, Verner Murdock and Raymond “Buck” Murdock.

Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 in the Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc. Daryl L. Throckmorton, Owner/Director, 197 N. Maiden St., Waynesburg, PA 15370. There will be additional visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 112 North Richhill St., Waynesburg, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the time of the service with Rev. Gary Grau officiating. Burial will be in Greene Co. Memorial Park, Morgan Twp., Greene Co.
