WEST BROWNSVILLE – A Waynesburg man was arrested Sunday on charges stemming from allegations that he repeatedly stabbed another man during an altercation in Washington County.

State police in Belle Vernon said Anthony Robert Stockdale, 39, was charged with one felony count of aggravated assault and misdemeanor count each of simple assault and reckless endangerment following the altercation that occurred at 69 Main St. in West Brownsville Borough early Sunday morning.

According to the criminal complaint, police were notified at 3:51 a.m. of a stabbing at the residence and that the alleged victim, Johnny Onisko, had been stabbed multiple times and was transported by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Police interviewed Onisko at the hospital, who reported that his friend Stockdale stabbed him because he thought Onisko was having an affair with his wife.

Onisko said Stockdale pulled up onto his property and approached him and Stockdale’s wife while they were in his yard sitting around a campfire and talking, and Stockdale then began screaming at his wife, the complaint states.

Onisko said he stood up and argued with Stockdale, who allegedly had a folding knife tucked behind one of his legs; Onisko said he then pushed Stockdale as they argued, and Stockdale then stabbed him three times in the chest and one time in the arm, the complaint states.

EMS responded and Onisko was transported to the hospital where he was treated for the stab wounds, police said.

Stockdale was later interviewed at the state police barracks in Waynesburg, where he admitted to committing the charges filed against him, the complaint states.

Following his arrest, Stockdale was placed in Washington County jail on $100,000 straight bail ordered by Magisterial District Judge Larry Hopkins. He was later released after posting bail.

Stockdale’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled to be held before Magisterial District Judge Joshua Kanalis on May 7 at 2:45 p.m.
