During this time of the year, there are many activities in the outdoors. Trout season is in full swing, turkey season is in and walleye season has begun.

Trout season came in with its usual fanfare and the fishing was better than average. All the streams in the county have reached their quota for stocking and the stocking is now finished for 2015. The closet place to being stocked is the Youghiogheny River. It will be stocked on June 19. The only other place that will be stocked will be in West Virginia. Even the streams in the central part of the state will reach their quota of stocking by mid-May. The number of fish being stocked has dropped of tremendously in the past few years.

Turkey season is on, and if you have the time there are plenty of nice birds out in the woods. The only problem I have with turkey season is that it should come in a week or two earlier for the warmer counties in the south west. Most of the birds have already matted and the hens are going to nest. I have seen hens with little chicks in the last week of season. The hens need a three-to-four-week incubation period. That hen had to nest in late April.

Probably the least known season to come in is walleye season. Good catches of walleyes have been reported in the river. I myself was able to catch a limit of walleyes with one going 23 inches. They are hard to figure out and some times almost impossible. This is the time to catch them. They have just finished the spawn and are feeding heavy. The water temperature is perfect. So if you get a chance give them a try.

I have not heard much about the morel season. Mushroom pickers are pretty tight mouthed about where and how many mushrooms they harvest. I have not had a chance to get out this year. Been to busy trying to figure out what to do with the water issues.

If you get a chance, pack up the family and get out and enjoy what they county has to offer.
