Rohanna opens with 3-over 73
Robert Rohanna had rough finish in the second round last week, missing the cut by one stroke after opening with a sub-par round.
The Waynesburg Central graduate had a less than stellar start in Thursday’s opening round of the 110th Visa Open de Argentina presented by OSDE with four straight bogeys. But, Rohanna turned it around by going 1-under in the final 14 holes to close the first round at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires for an opening 3-over 73.
Rohanna enters today’s second round one stroke off the projected cut for the low 55 scores (and ties).
American Danny Balin holds the first-round lead at 6-under 64.
“It didn’t go that bad after the start. I started 3-putting early and really didn’t make anything until my 18th hole. I made a 12-footer,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger.
After the four-bogey start, Rohanna stopped the bleeding with a birdie and four straight pars to go out in 3-over 37.
He opened the back with a par, but lost two more strokes with back-to-back bogeys.
Rohanna got those two lost strokes back with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15. He closed the back nine with bogey-par-birdie to come back in even-par 36.
“I had a lot of chances at par saves from inside 10 feet and just couldn’t get them to fall,” said Rohanna. “I actually drove it pretty good today, all except a few holes.”
Given his seven bogeys, Rohanna had a lot to say about the greens.
“This course is like Pinehurst greens, but worse. And, it’s so firm. I didn’t hit it that bad, if only I make a few putts to save some momentum or something. The greens are crazy and so firm, it’s hard to get good distances.
“And, if the ball doesn’t carry far enough into the green, it comes back off like 15 yards. If it lands on top, the ball goes over. It’s just a hard place, so under par is good.”
