Martha Custis Thorn
Martha Custis Thorn, 92, of Waynesburg, formerly of Morgantown, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born August 13, 1923, in Pursglove, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Cora McAndrews Jerome.
Mrs. Thorn was employed at G.C. Murphy in Morgantown and Waynesburg.
She was a member of Fort Martin United Methodist Church, Maidsville, West Virginia. After moving to Waynesburg, she attended Jefferson Baptist Church.
Mrs. Thorn was a loving and generous person who was always helping others. She was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 548 Ladies Auxiliary, Morgantown. She was a volunteer at Monongalia General Hospital, where she put in over a thousand hours of service. She served as a volunteer at both Chestnut Hills Nutrition Site and Senior Monongalians. With a loving heart and generous spirit, she used her skills as a seamstress to create baby quilts for children’s hospitals and lap quilts for veterans that have found homes all across the United States.
Surviving are two daughters, Nelda Kern and husband Barry of Jefferson and Linda Virgili and significant other Jerry Kosik of Bella Vista, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Deceased are her husband, Richard Thorn, and a son, William Thorn.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Monday, October 19, in McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Morgantown, with Pastor John Dorean officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Martin Cemetery.
