State grants awarded to area first responders
WAYNESBURG – State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, recently announced that state grants totaling more than $390,000 are coming to 37 fire and ambulance companies in the 50th Legislative District, including close to $220,000 for 22 in Greene County.
“The funding through the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program is vital because our fire and ambulance units need a break from raffles, spaghetti dinners and other fund-raisers as they strive to protect us,” Snyder said. “Fortunately, the House recently passed legislation that would extend the program for another four years.”
Snyder said the grant program, due to expire at the end of June this year, provides crucial funding – $30 million a year from slot machine proceeds – for essential gear and station upkeep. Besides extending the program through June 2020, Snyder said House Bill 1877 would add career EMS companies as eligible recipients if they are designated as a municipality’s primary EMS provider. H.B. 1877 now awaits consideration in the state Senate.
