PennDOT reminds motorists to drive safely around snowplows
The snow recently falling in the area reminds us that winter is here, and snow covered roads can present challenges to motorists.
Highway maintenance crews from PennDOT District 12’s four maintenance offices in Greene, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties will be working around the clock to keep the highways clear of snow and ice during winter storms.
Motorists can help to ensure their own safety and the safety of winter maintenance workers by observing a few simple rules when encountering snow removal equipment:
n STAY BACK: Maintain at least six car lengths to avoid collisions and damage from flying anti-skid materials and salt.
n BE PATIENT: Remember that PennDOT crews are working to make the highways as safe as possible for you the customer.
n BE VISIBLE: Motorists should move slightly to the left side of their lane and turn their lights on when approaching a snowplow from the rear. This will help the snowplow driver to see you in his mirrors.
n REDUCE SPEED: Snowplows travel slower and often must stop or even backup. Stay alert and do not pass a snowplow until it has reached a clear area.
n ALLOW SPACE: Avoid traveling alongside of snowplows. They can suddenly shift after hitting snowdrifts or slush. The average snowplow weighs 50,000 pounds compared to the average car’s 3,000 pounds.
Also, remember to always wear your seatbelt and never drink and drive.
