Yellow Jackets split doubleheader with W&J
The Waynesburg men had a strong second half, while the women couldn’t overcome an early deficit as the Yellow Jackets split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against visiting Washington & Jefferson.
The Waynesburg men broke free from a 32-32 halftime tie for a 70-58 win over the rival Presidents, while the Yellow Jacket women fell behind by 24 points in the first quarter on their way to a 77-64 loss to Washington & Jefferson.
DJ Ritchie led the Yellow Jackets (2-2, 2-9) with 14 points. Nate Labishak added 11.
Brian Graytok scored a game-high 21 points for the Presidents (0-4, 0-11). Gianni Buarne added 12.
Waynesburg held a 25-20 advantage in field goals made, including a 6-4 advantage in 3-point goals. Both teams made 14 free throws.
The Washington & Jefferson women led 31-7 after the first quarter, but Waynesburg cut five points off the deficit with a 20-15 second quarter. The Presidents (4-0, 9-2) pushed the lead to 25 at the end of the third quarter. Waynesburg held a 22-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Katie Gehlmann led Waynesburg (2-2, 4-7) with 16 points. Addy Knetzer added 12.
Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 21 points for Washington & Jefferson. Amirah Moore (12), Rachel Bellhy (12), Danielle Parker (11), and Taylor Cortazzo (10) were also in double digits for the Presidents.
