Betty Jean Chambers Hewitt

Betty Jean Chambers Hewitt, 90, of Waynesburg, formerly of Graysville, died at 3:29 a.m. Sunday, January 24, 2016, in Evergreen Assisted Living, Waynesburg, after being seriously ill for the past month.

She was born August 30, 1925, in Richhill Township (Nebo), Greene County, a daughter of the late August Ward and Bessie Ann Richey Chambers.

Mrs. Hewitt had resided in Graysville from 1954 until moving to Waynesburg in June 2014.

She was a former member of Nebo United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Graysville at the time of her death.

Mrs. Hewitt was a 1943 graduate of the former Richhill Township High School in Wind Ridge.

She was employed by West Greene School District as a cafeteria worker for 34 years, prior to retiring in 1994.

Mrs. Hewitt was a former member of Graysville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and attended West Greene Area Senior Citizens, as long as her health permitted.

She loved cats and named and raised beef cattle as pets for several years. She enjoyed helping her friends and community neighbors and baking wedding and birthday cakes for family and neighborhood friends.

On July 3, 1954, she married Fred Wilson Hewitt, who died October 5, 2005.

Surviving are two sons, Lanny C., husband of Jo Ann Hewitt of Wind Ridge and Lynn E. Hewitt, of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon and Eric Hewitt, Laura Scott and Sara Hewitt; four step-grandchildren, Rachael, Aimee, James and Joseph Gillispie; five great-grandchildren, Everett, Emeline, Avielle and Nora Hewitt and Lindley Reed; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son who died at birth, and two brothers, Glenn E. and Richard Lloyd Chambers.

Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 27, with the Rev. James H. Jarvis officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Richhill Township.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Humane Society of Greene County, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
