Gertrude E. Gary
Gertrude E. Gary, 87, formerly of Deep Valley and New Freeport, died at 6:55 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2016, in Canonsburg Hospital, after being in failing health for the past nine years.
She was born April 5, 1928, in Wetzel County (Boardtree), West Virginia, a daughter of the late John Nelson and Gertrude Mary Pendergast Johnson.
She resided in Greene County for most of her life.
Mrs. Gary was a member of New Freeport Church of Christ.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlepoint and canning, as long as her health permitted.
Mrs. Gary was an accomplished guitar player, who in her early years was offered a chance to play at Wheeling Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, but declined to raise her family.
She was self-employed for most of her life in caring for the area elderly.
Mrs. Gary enjoyed her time with family and grandchildren.
Surviving are a daughter, Janie L. Gilbert of Claysville; a son, Howard “Junior,” husband of Kathleen Pearson, of Washington; three grandchildren, Tammy Morris, Jodi Linderman and Joseph Pearson; four great-grandchildren, Summer, Tabatha and Scott Morris and Brook Pearson; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Alpheus Pearson; three sisters, Nancy Porter, Anna May Johnson and Mildred Rhome; and three brothers, Robert and Thomas Lee Johnson and Johnny Johnson, who died in infancy.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Monday, January 25, in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, with evangelist David Deagel and elder Darrel Thomas assisting. Interment will follow in Centennial Cemetery, Aleppo Township.
