Jakob Bissett, rifle
Jakob Bissett is a man for all seasons at Jefferson-Morgan High School.
Already a football player and baseball player for the Rockets, the senior became a shooter on the rifle team at Waynesburg Central for his senior year.
Bissett also is strong in the classroom and plans to study environmental science or radiology at California (Pa.) University.
For all of the above, Bissett is Jefferson-Morgan’s winter sports male selection in the Centennial Chevrolet Scholar/Athlete Spotlight program.
A son of Nanette and Michael Bissett of Waynesburg, Bissett has an older brother, 20-year-old Joshua.
He originally had plans to study radiology at Cal U, but a recent visit may have changed his mind.
“I recently toured the campus and learned about their environmental science program,” he said. “It’s one of their better programs.”
Mix in the fact that he is an avid outdoorsman and it’s fairly easy to see why Bissett may be changing his major even before he enters college.
“I like animals and enjoy studying about their health and how the environment can affect their health,” Bissett said. “I’d like to do all I can to make it better, not just for the animals, but for everyone.”
And, his love of the outdoors and hunting played a role in his trying out for the rifle team.
“This is my first year on the rifle team, so it’s kind of new to me,” Bissett said. “I am big into hunting, small game, turkey, deer and I like fishing probably more than hunting.”
But he likes baseball better than any of the other sports he plays.
“I am a wide receiver and cornerback in football and I play third base, catcher and pitcher in baseball,” Bissett said. “Baseball is my favorite sport. I’ve been playing it the longest, probably since I was in first grade. Baseball is more in my family. My brother played and I used to play a lot with him.”
Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown is the professional athlete Bissett admires the most. “He is a very good person off the field, he’s a hard worker and he’s really fun to watch,” Bissett said.
