Man found dead in house fire identified
Investigators determined the cause of death for a Greene County man found dead at the scene of a fire in Springhill Township on March 10.
According to the Greene County Coroner’s office, David Riley, 53, died from smoke inhalation from the house fire at 498 Morford Road in Aleppo. The fire was reported around 3:20 a.m.
State police and fire marshals were investigating the fire and found “a deceased person badly burned within the fire scene,” according to reports.
An autopsy conducted later by Greene County Coroner Greg Rohanna determined the cause of death. Officials said the cause and manner of the fire are still under investigation.
On March 10, the Messenger contacted the New Freeport Volunteer Fire Company — who was the primary responder to the fire — and a representative from the fire company said the fire was called in by an unidentified neighbor at 3:20 a.m.
The representative stated that when the fire company responded to the scene they observed a mobile home engulfed in flames and found a body in front of the structure, and it took fire fighters less than 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
Volunteer fire departments from Richhill Township and Cameron, W.Va., along with Southwest EMS, assisted at the scene, according to reports.
