Mary Elizabeth Mathason Brewer, 98, of Alliance, Ohio, went home to be with her Lord at 3:32 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2016, in Inn at Belden Village in Canton, Ohio.

Born June 18, 1918, in Waynesburg, to Thomas W. and Daisy G. (Wise) Mathason, she was a 1937 graduate of Waynesburg High School.

She was employed by South Penn Telephone Co. in Waynesburg and retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Co. in Alliance. She was a life member of Telephone Pioneer Club.

A resident of Alliance since 1950, she was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of Fireside Sunday School Class and served with Mission & Diaconate Boards at First Baptist. She was also a member of American Baptist Women, Social Committee, Caring Hands and the Chancel Choir.

She was a member of Alliance Senior Center and Retired Steel Workers, volunteered for Rodman Library Literary Training Classes, served as a Pink Lady at Alliance City Hospital and was a member of East Franklin Grange in Waynesburg.

She had a passion for painting, for which she received numerous awards.

Surviving are a niece, Donna Stephenson of Waynesburg; nephew David Mathason of Old Tappan, New Jersey; three great-nephews, James Edwin Stephenson, Matthew Stephenson and David Patrick Mathason and great-niece Amy Elizabeth Hagan.

Deceased are her husband, Harold F. Brewer, whom she married November 1, 1947, and who died March 16, 1984; her parents, Thomas W. and Daisy G. Mathason; and two brothers, Charles T. Mathason and James W. Mathason.

The family received friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016, in First Baptist Church, Alliance. Celebration service began at 10 a.m. with Pastor Steve Rhodes and the Rev. Gordon Thomas officiating. Burial took place in Highland Memorial Park.
