Presidents edge Yellow Jackets

By For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Waynesburg ended its football season with a 14-10 loss to Washington and Jefferson College on Senior Day at John F. Wiley Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets closed out a 2-8 season at 2-6 in PAC games, while W&J improved to 8-2, 6-2, despite being held well under its 40.1 scoring average this season. Total offense and passing offense numbers also were down for the Presidents, as Waynesburg stepped up defensively in its last game of the season.

Waynesburg took an early lead when freshman kicker Mike Ryhal connected on a 26-yard field goal at the end of a 13-play, 71-yard drive that took 6:46 to complete but W&J rallied for the win.

The teams battled tooth and nail, with W&J getting the go-ahead and winning score on a 27-yard Pete Coughlin run with 8:24 remaining in the third quarter.

Coughlin, W&J’s quarterback, also led the Presidents with 60 net rushing yards and passed for 162 more with no touchdowns, but no interceptions.

Ben Ciero paced Waynesburg’s ground attack with 49 yards on 18 carries and scored Waynesburg’s only touchdown on a 4-yard run. Freshman quarterback Tyler Perone had a good day passing, as he completed 22 of 35 passes for 218 yards.

Keith Barnes and Ta’Vaughn Johnson were Waynesburg’s leading receivers, Barnes grabbing five for 70 and Johnson snaring six for 65.
