Rohanna opens with 3-over 74
Robert Rohanna came out of the gate strong with an eagle, but couldn’t maintain the momentum Thursday afternoon and finished the first round of the 111th VISA Open de Argentina presentado por OSDE with a 3-over 74.
The Waynesburg Central graduate is tied in 64th place, one shot off the cut line at 2-over. The low 55 scores and ties advance to Saturday’s third round at Olivos Golf Club in Buenos Aires.
Daniel Stapff and Rafael Gomez share the first round lead at 4-under 67.
“I actually played pretty good today, and shot 3 over. (The course) played really hard and as weird as it sounds, I actually hit the ball well,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “The par-3s are really hard, small greens and every single one was into the wind. I hit some good iron shots all over the pins that just didn’t end up in a good spot. They either landed pin-high and take the slope off the green or land a yard short and end up in the bunker. The wind blew like 15-25 (mph) all day.”
Rohanna started with an eagle-3 on No. 1.
“I hit a great driver and an 8-iron to like 3 feet,” Rohanna said of his opening hole.
A bogey followed on No. 2 and he slid to even for the round with a bogey on No. 4. Rohanna finished bogey-birdie-par to go out in even-par 36.
Rohanna closed with three bogeys and six pars to come back in 3-over 38.
“I caught two flyers in the rough, on No. 2 and 15. And then, I bogeyed four of the par-3s. I honestly hit one bad shot off those tees, too. I just didn’t make my par putts,” said Rohanna.
Although he felt he left shots on the course, Rohanna admitted he didn’t play his way out out of the tournament.
“No, I didn’t. I could have scored better today, which stinks, but hopefully tomorrow I make lots of birdies and get back into it. Yeah, it played pretty tough today and scores weren’t that low, but I can make up one shot,” said Rohanna, adding, “And, make a few more putts.”
