Bowlby Library announces upcoming events

The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg recently announced the following upcoming events. For more information about any of these events, call the library at 724-627-9776.

n The Friends of the Bowlby Public Library would like to invite the public to attend the Holiday Open House featuring the Friends’ Cookie Walk/Cookie Raffle on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the library. Cookies will be for sale for $3 per dozen (box container) or $5 per dozen (Christmas Tin provided by the Friends). Pictures with Santa will also be available from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. that day; the cost is $10 for two 5×7 photos. The library is also offering a Holiday Story Time from 5 to 6 p.m. Raffle tickets are on sale now for $1 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5 for a Cookie Basket (filled with 12 different cookie-filled tins) and a Children’s Christmas Basket (filled with toys, games, books, etc.). All proceeds from sales will benefit the Bowlby Library.

n The Bowlby Library mascot, Fetch, would like to invite his stuffed friends to the Annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover. Youngsters of all ages can bring their favorite stuffed animal to the library on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. Fetch and his friends — plus their owners — can enjoy a special Holiday Story Time. After story time and craft time, the children say goodbye to their stuffed animals and the fun overnight adventure begins. See what happens when the library is closed; the stuffed animals will make new friends, play and maybe even sleep. Owners may pick up stuffed animals the next day between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

n The Bowlby Library’s monthly Adult Craft Night is held on the first Thursday of each month and the second Saturday each month. Adult Craft Night will be Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This month’s project will be a pallet Christmas tree; the cost is $20 for materials. Seating is limited; call the library at 724-627-9776 to sign up or stop by the circulation desk.

n The Bowlby Library is offering free American Red Cross Adult, Child and Infant CPR Certification training on Monday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Space is limited; call the library to register at 724-627-9776.

n On Friday, Dec. 9, the Children’s and Family Literacy Departments at the Bowlby Library will be hosting an After Hours Holiday Pajama Party. Join the library from 4 to 8 p.m. for a viewing of a holiday movie; the library will also share warm cookies and milk, along with games, seasonal crafts and activities. Family members are invited and encouraged to attend. Don’t forget to wear your Christmas jammies. Call the library at 724-627-9776 to register.

n Bowlby Library’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is inviting all local teenagers to their After-After Hours on Friday, Dec. 9, from 8 to 10 p.m. Teens aged 13 to 18 are invited to the Bowlby Library; there is a suggested $2 donation at the door. Call the library at 724-627-9776 to preregister for this event.

n The Children’s Department at the Bowlby Library is offering a special story time called “Curious George’s Christmas Party” on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be curious-themed games, crafts and stories; this program is for children ages 3 to 8 years of age. The library will be providing a light lunch. Call the library to register your child at 724-627-9776. This program is sponsored by Inquire Within and Chevron.

n It’s Movie Night @ Your Library on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Bowlby Library. The staff will be previewing “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” starring Jim Carrey, beginning promptly at 6 p.m. There will be free popcorn and beverage for attendees.

n The Bowlby Library will be closed Saturday, Dec. 24 through Monday, Dec. 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday, and closed on Saturday, Dec. 31 and Monday, Jan. 2, for the New Year holiday. The library will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

n T.O.P.S. — Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a weight management support group that meets every Saturday at the Bowlby Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. New members are always welcome.

n “Color Outside the Lines” is a program at the Bowlby Library for adults who may be interested in the latest craze of adult coloring books. Coloring books are not just for kids. The process of coloring has been shown to be stress-reducing, calm-inducing and joy-producing, for people of all ages. The coloring resurgence has spread across the nation, with adults enjoying the creative and therapeutic benefits of coloring. We will provide coloring sheets and supplies to get you started. Join the library weekly every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library.

n The Bowlby Library offers a free online tutoring database called Brainfuse. Brainfuse offers a comprehensive suite of online academic services designed to support many learning needs and styles. One-on-one online tutoring is available daily between 2 and 11 p.m. Brainfuse also offers a writing lab, study guides and skill building resources that are available 24/7. Online databases can be accessed using a library card at www.evakbowlby.org.

n Looking for free music? Look no further than the Bowlby Library’s website, where you will find a link to an online music library offered by Freegal. There are over 10 million songs on Freegal and over 15,000 music videos. As a library patron, you can download three free songs every week and enjoy streaming music of your choice for three hours daily.

There are over 200 genres to pick from and thousands of popular artists. Grab your library card and start downloading; mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems.

n The Bowlby Library offers a language database called Rocket Languages. There are 15 language courses, including: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese Brazilian, Russian, American Sign Language, ESL for Spanish and Japanese, as well as English. This database can be found on the library’s website and accessed using a library card. Start learning a new language today; mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems.

n If you love eBooks, try our new mobile app for Freading (available on Apple and Android devices). There are over 60,000 titles available for simultaneous downloads (no holds). Publishers include: Algonquin, Capstone, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Open Road Media, Poisoned Pen Press, Skyhorse Publishing, Sourcebooks, Workman and many more. Freading now offers all the Lonely Planet Travel Guides and over 1,000 eBooks in Spanish. EBook users will always have content available to download. n Bowlby Library patrons can access their favorite magazines on their mobile devices and personal computers by using Zinio. With a library card, patrons will be able to download past issues as well as current issues from the library with no worries about late fines and overdue charges. The Zinio app can be downloaded on Apple and Android devices or access from the library’s website at www.evakbowlby.org.
