Margaret Kalis, 87, of Greensboro, died on Monday, August 29, 2016, in the Marquis Gardens Place, Uniontown.

Miss Kalis was born on March 1, 1929, in Greensboro, a daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Hromy) Kalis.

She was a 1947 graduate of Mapletown High School, and she received an RN degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and a BS degree from California State College (California University of Pennsylvania). She worked as a registered nurse for the Veterans Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan and the Veterans Hospitals in Aspinwall and Oakland, Pennsylvania. She subsequently served for over 38 years as school nurse for the Southeastern Greene School District, retiring in 1993.

Miss Kalis was a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Alumni Association of California State College and RHO Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an honorary member of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Pittsburgh and a life member of Greene County Association of School Retirees. She was a past president of the former Dunkard Valley Business & Professional Women. She served as financial secretary and treasurer of the Slovak Catholic Sokol Assembly 116 in Greensboro for over 32 years, auditor for Greensboro Borough for 14 years, and treasurer for Greensboro and Monongahela Township Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for over 32 years.

Miss Kalis was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Greensboro, where she was active with the Rosary Society. Upon the closing of Holy Family, she joined St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, Pa.

Surviving is her brother, Edward Kalis, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Deceased in addition to her parents is her sister, Mary Ann Kalis Surprenant and her brother, Joseph F. Kalis.

Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Carmichaels, where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 followed at 11:00 a.m. by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
