Week One is in the books and two Greene County squads grabbed their first victory of the early season in the first official week of high school football in the WPIAL.

Carmichaels picked up a pivotal Week One victory last week with a 20-12 triumph over Monessen on the road in the Tri-County South Conference.

The Mikes (1-0, 1-0) were led by a strong rushing attack that collected 235 yards. Cody Brown led all rushers with 70 yards on 10 rushes, while Nick Mundell and Jonathan Christopher added 53 yards each. Brennen Pelzer also chipped in with 43 rushing yards.

On the opening drive, Carmichaels went 14 plays that spanned over 65 yards and ended with a two-yard plunge into the end zone by Mundell. Mikes made it 8-0 at the end of one after Robert Meadows tackled a Greyhounds’ runner in the end zone for a safety.

Christopher powered into the end zone on a one-yard keeper in the second quarter and the Mikes held a 14-6 lead at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Mikes ended another long drive with a 66-yard halfback pass to Brown from Mundell that put the game out of reach for Monessen.

Carmichaels will be on the road tonight, as the Mikes venture out to non-conference foe Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.

After losing their Week Zero match-up with Serra Catholic, Mapletown bounced back with an 18-0 victory over Cornell.

The Maples (1-1) were led by Dylan Rush, who racked up 257 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Mapletown, which compiled 317 yards on the ground in the win, grabbed a 6-0 lead in the second quarter after an 86-yard scoring run by Rush.

After neither team could get to the end zone in the third quarter, Rush registered touchdown runs of 7 and 3 yards in the final quarter to pick up the win.

The Maples will be back on the road tonight against county rival West Greene. First kick in Rogersville is at 7 p.m.

Mapletown has won 10 of the last 12 meetings against West Greene.

Speaking of the Pioneers, West Greene suffered a 32-20 loss to Avella last Friday.

Avella trailed 12-8 in the second period, and rallied to outscore the Pioneers, 24-8, the rest of the way.

After the Eagles scored the opening touchdown, West Greene (0-1, 0-2) tallied two straight scores by way of a four-yard pass to Zach Pettit from Cole Hamilton and a four-yard run by Benjamin Jackson.

Trailing 32-12 in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers ended the scoring in the contest with an 18-yard scoring toss to Isaac Courtwright from Pettit.

Jefferson-Morgan recorded a 54-7 non-conference loss last week to Springdale.

The Dynamos collected 21 points in the opening 12 minutes of the game and then piled on 26 more points in the second quarter to invoke the mercy rule in the second half.

The Rockets (0-2) avoided the shutout in fourth quarter with a 45-yard touchdown dash to the end zone by Colten Davidson.

J-M hosts Monessen tonight in a critical Tri-County South match-up. Kickoff is 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on greenesports.net.

Waynesburg Central began their 2016 season with a 42-14 loss to Mount Pleasant.

The Vikings started the contest with 21 straight points in the first quarter and added a touchdown in each of the next three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Raiders (0-1, 0-1) got on the scoreboard with a five-yard touchdown run by Colin McCracken and an eight-yard scoring keeper by Dylan Scritchfield.

McCracken ended his night with 136 yards on the ground on 18 carries, while Jacob McCallum hauled in five receptions for 67 yards.

Waynesburg will continue Interstate Conference play tonight, as the Raiders host McGuffey. The action starts at 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on greenesports.net.
