West Greene’s Lampe twins go 1-2 at Section 3-A cross country race

By The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

California’s girls cross country team picked up wins over Washington High, 18-30, and West Greene, 15-50, on Tuesday in a Section 3-A meet at West Greene’s new course near the airport.

The Lady Pioneers have four runners, and being that five is needed to field a team, they lost to Washington (15-50) and McGuffey (15-50) but West Greene showed it has three strong runners.

McKenna Lampe broke the tape in 21:46 to establish the first winning mark on the new course and the record for West Greene. McKenna’s twin-sister, Madison, came in second at 22:08. The twins are also integral parts of the Lady Pioneers softball team, who won the WPIAL Championship this past spring.

West Greene’s Rachel Jones came in third place at 22:30.

California’s Samantha Kulz broke the Lady Pioneers’ streak with a fourth-place finish at 25:21. Teammates Nicole Anderson (26:27), Alexis Kronander (26:42) and Anna Elko (26:45) came in sixth, seventh and eighth to set the tone for the Lady Trojans.

California’s Jenna Miller finished in 14th place at 30:24. The Lady Pioneers’ Belinda Tedrow finished in 34:07.

Washington High School’s Ben Heim won the boys race in 17:14 to establish the first course record in the inaugural race. The Little Prexies topped California, 23-32, McGuffey, 26-31, and West Greene, 15-50. The Pioneers also fell to California, 15-50, and McGuffey, 15-50. West Greene only had one runner compete, and therefore couldn’t win any of the races as a team.

California’s Charles Roberts came in second at 18:08 and Washington’s Carlos Garica was third in 19:40. McGuffey’s Colby Bamberger was fourth at 20:11 and teammate Shawn Eldis checked in at fifth with a time of 20:19.

After two Little Prexies crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh, the Trojans’ Cameron Bell (20:45) and Joshua Gwyn (20:50) came in eighth and ninth. The next four runners were Highlanders, before California’s Matt Shimko finished at 21:57 in 14th place. The Pioneers’ lone runner, Mitchell Murdock, completed the 5K race in 22:16.

West Greene returns to its home course Tuesday with a triangular meet against Burgettstown and Brownsville.
