Bowlby Public Library announces May events

The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg recently announced the following upcoming events.

n The Bowlby Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day.

n Two Creative Crafting for Adults classes are held every month. May’s project is a Clay Pot Person. Cost of materials is $20 and is due at the time of registration; the next May class will be held Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m. Seating is limited, so register early by calling the library at 724-627-9776.

n Kindergarteners and second graders are invited to Coding Camp. In conjunction with PBS Kids ScratchJr, the camp helps children ages five through eight learn core coding concepts as they create their own interactive stories and games using PBS Kids characters. PBS Kids ScratchJr incorporates PBS Kids media properties, including Wild Kratts, Wordgirl, Peg + Cat and the new series Nature Cat. As kids snap together colorful programming blocks to make their favorite characters move, jump, dance and sing, they will learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively. n The Children’s Department offers children a chance to be creative at the Library Lego Club. The library provides the Legos, the children provide the imagination. Children may drop into the library on Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m., and let the creativity flow as they build any number of fantastic creations with Lego building blocks.

n The Bowlby Library will be holding its Book Sale in the library’s Gazebo beginning May 15. Stop by and peruse the many adult, children’s, juvenile and young adult titles for sale at low prices.

n The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library Children’s Department is offering a special story time called Peg + Cat! on Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be themed games, crafts and stories; this program is for children ages three through eight years of age. The library will be providing a light lunch. Call the library to register your child at 724-627-9776. This program is part of the Inquire Within initiative and sponsored by Chevron.

n The Bowlby Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at the library on Monday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. The board meetings of the Bowlby Library are free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend. If there are specific issues you would like to raise or have interest in making a brief presentation during a community forum — held immediately preceding the board meeting – contact the director well in advance to give the library the best opportunity for accommodating you on the evening’s agenda. n It’s Movie Night @ Your Library on Wednesday, May 24, at the Bowlby Library. Free popcorn and beverage for attendees. The library will be previewing “Max 2: White House Hero,” beginning promptly at 6 p.m. Max is assigned to the White House while Butch, the secret service dog, is on maternity leave. He meets TJ, a 12-year-old boy, who is the President’s son. Due to his father’s high profile, he is trying hard to fit in and lead a normal life. During a state visit by the Russian president and his daughter, Alexandra, TJ is asked to accompany her, during their stay. TJ befriends Alex, but when they get into trouble, Max comes to the rescue.

n Bowlby Library’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is inviting all local teenagers to an After-After Hours on Friday, May 26, from 8 to 10 p.m. Teens aged 13-18 are invited to the Bowlby Library for an evening of music in the library gazebo. There is a suggested $2 donation for the event; snacks are provided. Call the library at 724-627-9776 to pre-register for this event.

n The Bowlby Library is recruiting high school students for its Teen Advisory Group (TAG). Teens, who want their voices heard when it comes to teen library services, are encouraged to attend weekly meetings. TAG influences library services, programs and collections and is a valuable asset to the Library. The Teen Advisory Group meets every Wednesday at 4 p.m. For more information, call the library at 724-627-9776.

n The Tiny Tim Tomato Project will be held on Tuesday, June 6, at 5 p.m. for children (ages two through six years of age). A Master Gardener will be at the library to guide youngsters on planting and growing their very own healthy tomato plant. There will also be special stories and crafts about gardening with Kerry McClure, head of the children’s department. Register today by calling the library at 724-627-9776.

n The Family Literacy and Children’s departments at the Bowlby Library will present a three-part series for children and their families on personal and home safety in June. “Keep Me Safe” will be held on Saturdays, June 3, 10 and 17. n The Bowlby Library is offering a Hunter Safety Program on Saturday, June 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is a free course; a light lunch will be provided by the library. Applicants must register online at Pennsylvania Game Commission’s website.

n The Friends of the Bowlby Public Library is accepting new members. Joining the organization is easy and your tax deductible donation will benefit the library. Friends of the Library group consist of people who care about libraries and who are interested in promoting the welfare and growth of the Bowlby Library. n T.O.P.S. — Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a weight management support group that meets every Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bowlby Library. New members are always welcome.

n The Adult Literacy program at the Bowlby Library offers free test preparation for the GED, Civil Service exams and drivers licensing and life skills. Also, any adult wishing to brush up on their basic reading and math skills can do so at no charge through the Family Literacy Department at the library. The Family Literacy Department also offers free tutoring for school-age children through the summer months. To make an appointment, or more information, call 724-627-9776.

n The Bowlby Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. The new service includes free tests specifically based on the state’s DMV materials. It is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that let users hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask portions of the screen for greater visibility on the driving practice tests. n “Color Outside the Lines” is a program at the Bowlby Library for adults who may be interested in the latest craze of adult coloring books. Coloring books are not just for children; the process of coloring has been shown to be stress-reducing, calm-inducing and joy-producing, for people of all ages. The library will provide coloring sheets and supplies to get you started. Grab your lunch and join us weekly every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the library.

n The free online tutoring database called Brainfuse offers a comprehensive suite of online academic services designed to support many learning needs and styles. One-on-one online tutoring is available daily between 2:00-11:00 p.m. Brainfuse also offers a writing lab, study guides and skill building resources that are available 24/7. Online databases can be accessed using a library card at www.evakbowlby.org.

n Looking for free music? Look no further than the Bowlby Library’s website, where you will find a link to an online music library offered by Freegal. There are over 10 million songs on Freegal and over 15,000 music videos. Library patrons can download three free songs every week, and enjoy streaming music of your choice for three hours daily. There are over 200 genres to pick from and thousands of popular artists. Mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems.

n The Bowlby Library offers a language database called Rocket Languages. There are 15 language courses, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese Brazilian, Russian, American Sign Language, ESL for Spanish and Japanese, as well as English. This database can be found on the library’s website and accessed using a library card. Mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems.

n If you love ebooks, try the library’s new mobile app for Freading (available on Apple and Android devices). There are over 60,000 titles available for simultaneous downloads (no holds). Publishers include Algonquin, Capstone, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Open Road Media, Poisoned Pen Press, Skyhorse Publishing, Sourcebooks, Workman and many more. Freading now offers all the Lonely Planet Travel Guides and over 1,000 eBooks in Spanish. EBook users will always have content available to download.
