Waynesburg University suffered a controversial 24-22 setback to Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1, 6-10) sent out Tristan Buxton to wrestle the Presidents’ Alec Drabish at 125 pounds, but W&J coach Tommy Prairie called Drabish back to the bench after he put on his ankle bands that resulted in an injury default for Buxton.

The Presidents picked up forfeits at 133 and 141. Waynesburg senior Filippo Crivelli had to sit out at 141 due to illness.

W&J (1-1, 2-3) held a 12-6 lead but the Jackets got on the board when Waynesburg Central grad and freshman Shaun Wilson earned an 18-4 major decision to cut the deficit to 12-10.

The Presidents won by decision at 157 for a 15-10 lead before the Yellow Jackets’ Dan Verhovsek pulled out a 4-2 decision over Alex Miller at 165 for a 15-13 W&J lead. The Presidents increased their lead to 21-13 with a fall at 174.

Waynesburg senior Ryan Shank won by fall at 184 for a 21-19 W&J lead, but the Presidents’ picked up a decision at 197 for a 24-19 advantage.

Elizabeth Forward grad Jake Evans needed a fall at 285 for the Jackets to rally for the win, but W&J’s Nick Kumburis was able to avoid being pinned and the Presidents clinched the two-point victory. Evans earned a 9-3 decision.

Waynesburg travels to Lycoming College this weekend for the Budd Whitehill National Duals. The Jackets will wrestle three matches on Friday, and will continue action on Saturday. The amount of matches will not be known until the duals begin.
