April A. Slifko, 49, of Rogersville, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, in her home.

She was born April 3, 1968, a daughter of Cathie Renner of Waynesburg.

A 1986 graduate of West Greene High School, Ms. Slifko was a gifted athlete who excelled in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was a standout freshman first baseman on West Greene’s 1983 softball team, which advanced to the PIAA Quarter Finals. After graduation, she attended Alderson Broaddus University in Phillipi, West Virginia, on a volleyball scholarship.

Ms. Slifko received her paramedic certification at Center for Emergency Medicine in Pittsburgh, and her career spanned more than 25 years. She served with the City of Pittsburgh EMS, EMS Southwest, Guardian Angel Ambulance Service, Medevac Ambulance Transport and, most recently, Priority One EMS. She served as an EMS field supervisor, EMS training specialist, quality assurance and compliance coordinator and was a member of Pennsylvania Strike Team.

She loved the outdoors, campfires and renovating her cabin. She was a gifted artist and cook.

Ms. Slifko was an upbeat person who looked for the best in everyone she met and surrounded herself with a large variety of unique and eclectic friends. She had a knack for finding the positives in every situation, even when it came to the illness that ravaged her. She was a role model of strength, love and light to all who knew her.

She was the “animal whisperer” who befriended all of her friends’ pets. She forged a bond with her roommate’s cat, Belle, who died on the same day.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her beloved younger brother, Cory (Laurie) Slifko of Waynesburg; two stepsisters, Alissa (Andrew) Burns of Wind Ridge and Julie Slifko of Pierson, Florida and two nephews, Colten and Lucas Slifko.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation or formal service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home LLC, 3275 West Roy Furman Highway, Rogersville.
