Classic Car Show to benefit Alzheimer’s research
This Sunday, June 4, about 60 classic antique automobiles will converge on the Carmichaels Area High School baseball field in a show of support to end the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Now in its second year, the fundraiser, which runs from noon to 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.
“While the majority of cars last year were classics or antiques, we’re also opening the show to other types of cars, motorcycles, trucks, in fact, any motorized vehicle,” said Melissa Shuckhart Cuppett, co-media chair of the Greene County Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
“Last year, we even had a vintage fire truck, old motorcycles, cars from the Mason-Dixon Mustang Club from Maryland, even an old racing car.”
Those entering their classic or antique autos can vie for trophies representing the oldest, the one that traveled the most distance to the event, a Participants Choice, a Kid’s Choice and a People’s Choice Award. There will also be a trophy awarded to the best purple car, purple being the symbolic color of the fight against Alzheimer’s.
All vehicles in the show must either pre-register ($15) online at www.alz.org or at the ball field from 10 a.m. to noon the day of the event ($20). The first 100 registrants will receive a dash plaque.
All proceeds from the Car Show will benefit the Annual Greene County Walk to end Alzheimer’s, scheduled for September 30 at 9 a.m. at Wanna B Park in Carmichaels.
“Last year’s show raised over $6,000, which went to the Alzheimer’s organization toward our yearly goal of raising $54,000 for the organization,” Shuckhart Cuppett said. “This year, our goal is to raise $57,000.”
The show will have more than classic cars for people to enjoy. DJ Ben Lawrence, originally from Carmichaels, will provide the music, and 26 small business and craft vendors will set up booths to exhibit their wares and information. Food vendors will be on hand to sell everything from pulled pork sandwiches by Dog Bite BBQ, pizza by Fox’s of Carmichaels, hot dogs, beverages, snacks and snow cones by the Kona Ice Truck.
To keep the youngsters entertained, the Flenniken Library will organize children’s activities that will augment other events such as coloring sheets, bean bag tosses and water balloon battles.
A series of Chinese auctions will also give attendees a chance to win items donated by local businesses and vendors. The event will also feature a 50-50 auction.
A representative of the Alzheimer’s Association will be present at the show to provide information about the disease and the September Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
According to Brittany Coulter, Constituent Event Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, there is an estimated 1,283 individuals in Greene County living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.
“Through our Car Show and September Walk to End Alzheimer’s, we are trying to help end this terrible disease,” said Shuckhart Cuppett. “We’re inviting everyone to come visit us at the Car Show, have a great time and contribute to the cause.”
