Rockets set up showdown for section title

Jefferson-Morgan positioned itself with a two-game showdown against Greensburg Central Catholic for the Section 1-A title with a pair of victories Monday afternoon.

The Rockets defeated visiting Monessen first, 12-2, needing just six innings to finish a game suspended last Friday in the third inning.

Then they took to the road, breezing to a 21-2 win at Mapletown (3-8, 4-11).

The Rockets (9-1, 13-8) host the Centurions today and then go to Greensburg Wednesday to determine the section title.

Monessen (6-6, 6-9) earned a split of its two-game Monday with a 13-3 win over Geibel Catholic.

Gage Clark started and finished the suspended game, improving to 5-0. He struck out nine and walked three. He also nearly hit for the cycle with a single, double and triple. Clark drove in four runs, scored two and had three stolen bases.

Joe Headlee and Jake Broadwater both had two hits in the win.

Losing pitcher Cory Fleming accounted for Monessen’s runs with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.

In the second game, the Rockets scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning against the Maples.

Devin Stoneking scattered four hits in the three-inning victory, striking out four and walking none.

Clark went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Dean also went 3-for-4, driving in four and scoring two. Headlee went 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored. Broadwater and Eli Rafail both had two singles and scored two runs. Broadwater had three RBI, while Rafail had two.

All Jefferson-Morgan starters had at least one hit.
