Lady Raiders rout Fillies, 10-0
WAYNESBURG — Waynesburg Central continued their offensive dominance in 2017, as the Lady Raiders routed Laurel Highlands, 10-0, in non-section girls’ soccer action Saturday night.
The Lady Raiders (12-1) have outscored their opponents, 93-10, this season.
“This is probably the best skilled team I have ever coached at any level,” Waynesburg coach Joe Kijowski said. “Our forwards get a lot of the attention, and rightfully so, but our midfielders do an excellent job with feeding the ball to those scorers and possessing the ball.”
Waynesburg is 4-1 in non-section action this season with wins against LH, Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward and Quaker Valley.
The Lady Raiders’ lone loss of the year was to non-section foe South Fayette on Sept. 2.
“We always try to step up and try to challenge ourselves in the non-section,” Kijowski said. “It’s important for us to face those Triple-A teams. These are good games for us as a team, but also we hope these wins against these tough teams will help us out with our seeding in the playoffs.”
The Fillies (7-5-1) were without some key players due to injuries and couldn’t keep up with the scoring punch of Waynesburg.
Senior Madison Clayton continued her scoring onslaught with five goals. Clayton has a WPIAL-leading 41, which matches last season’s total.
Freshman Rhea Kijowski tallied a pair of goals for Waynesburg, while junior Abby Virgin, sophomore Calli Gibson and sophomore Kaley Pell collected markers.
Both Rhea and sophomore Jillian Kijowski had three assists each, while Clayton added two helpers. Pell and sophomore Elise Benke had the other assists.
Freshmen keeper McKenzie Booth registered her seventh shutout of the season with two saves.
LH’s sophomore goalie Jillian Verbus suffered the loss with 11 stops.
Both teams will be back in section play Monday, as Waynesburg travels to Southmoreland and LH ventures out to Greensburg Salem.
“With this being a Saturday night game against an unfamiliar opponent, plus the kids didn’t have school the last two days, you never know what you are going to get,” Kijowski said. “We set the pace and we had good ball control. The girls are always hungry to play and they have their sights on the playoffs.”
