Local ‘spook’tacular events announced for haunting holiday

By Steve Barrett 6 min read

There will be plenty of things for boys and “ghouls” of all ages to do in Greene County this coming Halloween holiday, as numerous events and schedules have recently been announced for those who dare to celebrate All Hallows Eve.

From “Trick-or-Treat” schedules and parades to costume contests and spooky events held by the county museum and Waynesburg University, there are plenty of activities scheduled for this Halloween that are guaranteed to be a real scream.

‘Halloween Spooktacular’

Dress up in your best Halloween costumes for a chance to win cash prizes, trophies and medals during the 10th annual “Halloween Spooktacular.”

Starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing through 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, a panel of judges will assess Halloween costumes on the county courthouse steps.

The event is sponsored by Greene County Chamber of Commerce and Waynesburg Borough.

Registration, limited to those employed by a Waynesburg business or a Chamber member, must be completed and dropped off at the borough office – which is located at 90 E. High St. in Waynesburg – by noon on Friday, Oct. 27. They may also be emailed to wbgboro@wbgboro.comcastbiz.net.

There is no fee for registering, and forms and information can be picked up at the Chamber office or the borough office or Facebook page.

Those unable to make the time slot for judging on the courthouse steps can be judged at their places of employment. The winners will be announced on the steps of the courthouse at noon.

In case of rain, judging will take place in the borough office.

A $100 cash prize and a trophy will be awarded to the individual with the best costume as well as the group with the best costumes.

Second- and third-place winners in each category will each receive $50 and a medal. Groups are limited to eight people, and another $100 cash prize and custom carved pumpkin will go to the individual with the most original costume.

The custom carved pumpkin is being donated by Greene County Sheriff Brian Tennant and is being carved by Melody Longstreth.

Medal sponsor is Betsy Rohanna McClure, and trophy sponsor is Lisa Brown Allstate Insurance.

Pre-registered participants in the contest will receive a treat bag sponsored by First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Greene County.

Participant photographs will be taken when judged and published on the Chamber’s and borough’s Facebook pages.

During the event, the Waynesburg VFW Auxiliary will have a lunch and bake sale on the courthouse steps. Menu will include vegetable pizza, ham BBQ, soup, a variety of baked goods and desserts and more.

Award sponsors are Coach’s Cafe, Baily’s Insurance, Rhodes and Hammers Printing, McCracken Pharmacy, Pcsquared, Med Express and Laick Design.
