WASHINGTON — The Mapletown baseball team collected 11 hits and picked up their first win of the season last Friday night with a 12-2 victory in five innings over Geibel Catholic at Wild Things Park in Section 2-A play.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, the Maples (1-6, 1-4) responded with 11 unanswered runs to invoke the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth inning.

“I really liked how we responded from being down early in the game and how we fought through adversity tonight,” Mapletown coach Dominic DeCarlo said. “This was a team win and it was a great environment for our kids. We would like to thank everyone that weathered the cold and came out to support us.”

After the Gators (0-5, 0-4) went down in order in the opening inning, Mapletown, the home team on the scoreboard, took a 1-0 lead after winning pitcher Brian Bogden tripled with two outs and scored on a RBI single by Lane Powell.

Jacob Mariotti scored the tying run in the top of the second by taking advantage of three Mapletown errors.

The Gators took a 2-1 lead in the third inning after Mariotti smashed a RBI single that scored Isaiah Krizner, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Geibel had only scored on run in four games entering Friday’s game.

“We are just going to take the positives out of every game,” Geibel coach Shawn Chory said. “We started late in the spring and not having enough practice time because of the weather has really hurt us. I liked what I saw those first couple of innings, but just one mistake compounded into other mistakes and more runs.”

The Maples responded in the bottom half of the third with four runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Noah Haines slashed a two-out, two-run single, followed by a RBI double by Kevin Hayes. Hayes scored the final run of the inning after an errant pick-off throw.

“On offense, we wanted to attack and not wait for the walk,” DeCarlo said. “I thought our kids made good contact and we had a lot of solid hits to the outfield. One through nine, we were productive. We had 11 hits tonight and I think every kid in our lineup scored a run. That’s the balance we want every time out.”

Dylan Rush started the bottom of the fourth with a single and stole two bases to get to third base. Rush scored off on a Bogden’s RBI ground out.

The Maples had 14 stolen bases in the game, as Rush recorded a team-high four swipes.

Mapletown put the game away in the fifth with six runs on only three hits. Hayes had an RBI single in the inning, while the Maples scored their other runs on errors and wild pitches.

Bogden earned the win, throwing 85 pitches and recording eight strikeouts over five innings. The senior righty limited Geibel to just three hits.

“He got ahead of a lot of hitters and mixed up his speeds,” DeCarlo said. “Bobs is his nickname and sometimes we say that’s just Bobs being Bobs. He doesn’t worry about too much out there and is always positive. He doesn’t get down on himself if he has a bad pitch. He was very effective for us tonight.”

Jesse Yourish was tagged with the loss for the Gators, going four plus innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Colin Majhan came on in relief in the fifth.

“We have to learn from our mistakes and we can’t take them with us into the next play,” Chory said. “We have to have a short term memory out there. We are learning and growing every practice and every game. We have to start making the fundamental plays.”

Mapletown travels to Greensburg Central Catholic on Monday, while Geibel hosts Jefferson-Morgan.
