Rohanna opens with 3-over 73

Rachel Rohanna said she had one bad shot in Thursday’s opening round of the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge, otherwise the Waynesburg Central grad felt she played solid with a 3-over 73 at Willow Run Golf Club.

Rohanna had an early tee time so over half the field was on the course or had yet to tee off when she completed her round.

The low 60 scores and ties advance to the weekend.

“I hit the ball really well. It was real windy out there,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna hit one wayward shot, which led to a double bogey.

“I hit in the water on No. 16,” Rohanna said of the par-3. “I made a good double bogey, though.”

The double bogey capped a short run that started with a bogey-6 on No. 14 and a birdie-3 on No. 15.

Rohanna had an average round going until that three-hole run with 12 pars and one bogey. She bogeyed No. 4, but followed with a run of nine pars.

Rohanna played the front in 1-over 35 and the back in 2-over 38.

“Birdies are hard to come by,” said Rohanna. “It’s tough putting with the fast winds and greens.”

Rohanna hit 6-of-13 fairways and 12-of-18 greens in regulation. She needed 31 putts to complete the round and averaged 274 on her drives.

“I hit it great, actually. I am two yards off where I was hitting last year,” said Rohanna. “I had a lot of good birdie chances. I missed greens in the correct position and had a good shot at some chip-ins.

“I was making some good rolls.”

This is the second tournament Rohanna has played since the birth of her daughter. The Symetra Tour event is a four-round affair, and Rohanna is hoping to be playing all four days.

“I’m ready to go,” said Rohanna, adding, “I love it.

“It depends on the winds, but I think shooting around (even-par) 70 is possible.”
