Colonial Legion buries Carmichaels with 17-hit attack in 17-7 win
Jaryn Addis smacked a pair of doubles to lead a 17-hit attack as Colonial 3 remained alive in the Fayette County American Legion baseball playoffs with a 17-7, five-inning win over visiting Carmichaels on Tuesday.
Ricky Marucci doubled and singled, and Preston Frost tripled for Colonial (9-9), which pounded out six extra-base hits. Alec McLay and Owen Martin both added doubles.
The win advances Colonial in the losers bracket where it will play at Connellsville at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.
Colonial exploded for seven runs in the first as Addis and Marucci both hit two-run doubles off losing pitcher Steve Spehar. The hosts added two runs in the third and erupted for eight more in the fourth.
Carmichaels scored single runs in the second and fourth before putting up five in the top of the fifth in a bid to extend the game and avoid the 10-run mercy rule but fell one run short.
Winning pitcher Nick Climes went 4 1/3 innings with five walks and five strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Spehar struck out two before being relieved after one inning of work.
Gavin Pratt doubled and singled for Carmichaels, which had 10 hits. Zach Hillsman also had two hits for the visitors.
Brandon Bell, Steve Edenfield, Silvio Urani and Brandon Swaney each hit a pair of singles for Colonial.
Carmichaels ends its season at 2-15.
