American legion hosts its annual concert on the lawn
CARMICHAELS – What better remedy for relief on a hot summer night in July than to sit in a comfortable chair and listen to a free concert.
That’s not a fantasy conjured up during these Dog Days of Summer. No indeed. For the fifth consecutive year, musician members of American Legion Post 400 will assemble at the Greene Academy in Carmichaels and offer an eclectic selection of musical favorites for one solid hour, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19.
Ann Bargerstock, the zoning officer for Cumberland Township and the outgoing president of the Greene Academy board of directors, is a vocal advocate of this annual outdoor event.
“The band plays something for everybody,” she said. “And frankly, they are pretty good.”
The maestro, or the man with the baton, is Frank Ricco, a retired music teacher and principal in the Carmichaels Area School District.
We have about 25 members in the band, all volunteers,” Ricco said. “And we are a concert band, not just a brass band. On a good night we can expect between 80 to 100 people.”
This year’s concert will include patriotic and military music, selections from Disney movies, a tribute to the Blues Brothers and a salute to Henry Mancini, with selections from the Pink Panther.
“I would urge those who attend to bring a lawn chair, find a good spot and enjoy the music,” Ricco said. “If it rains we will move to the American Legion Post in Carmichaels. This is a rain or shine event.
