Bowlby Library to celebrate National Library Week
WAYNESBURG – The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg will be among libraries across the country participating in National Library Week April 8-14, celebrating the life-changing work of libraries, librarians and library workers.
Libraries aren’t just places to borrow books or study; they are also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies and develop their skills and passions. Stop in today.
Meanwhile, Bowlby Library has scheduled a host of events during April.
YOGA CLASSES – Beginners Yoga will be taught by Christa Turner (RYT) of Yoga Precepts three times a month on Saturdays in April at 1 p.m. ($30 for three classes). The fourth Saturday is “Happy Hour Yoga” for a $5 donation to the library. Space is limited so call early to register.
STORY CLASSES – It’s not too late to enroll your child. During National Library week, story classes will focus on the PA One Book, My Cousin Momo. Each child in attendance will receive a copy of the PA One Book.
The schedule for story classes:
n Preschoolers ages 3 to 4, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.; ages 4 to 5, Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m.
n Toddlers ages 18-35 months, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
n Stories Under the Moon ages 3 to 6 years, Wednesdays at 5 p.m.
n Baby Lapsit birth to 16 months, Thursdays at 1 p.m.
n Weekend readers ages 3 to 6 years, Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.
CREATIVE CRAFTING FOR ADULTS – Thursday, April 5 at 5 p.m. The April project is a butterfly paper sculpture in a shadow box. Cost for materials is $20.
AUTHOR BOOK TALK – Join the library during National Library Week and meet New York Times best-selling author Daleen Berry on Wednesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. Ms. Berry will be sharing from her latest book, “Shatter the Silence,” the romantic and long-awaited sequel to “Sister of Silence,” Berry’s 2011 breakout memoir about surviving abuse. “Shatter the Silence” is set in 1990s Appalachia. This event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served. Call the library to RSVP your seat at 724-627-9776.
LEGO BRICK MASTERS meets Saturdays, April 7 and 21 at 11 a.m. for ages 3 and older.
READING COMPETITION CLUB – Children in grades 4 through 8 are invited to join the Bowlby Team. Join the team on Tuesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. There will two additional meetings for reviewing the competition books on April 17 and 24 at 6 p.m.
TEEN ADVISORY GROUP – The Bowlby Library invites teenagers 13 to18 years old to join us at the library every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
CODE SQUAD – Students ages 6 to 12 years are invited to join the Code Squad. Classes meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays through May 10. Come join the library as participants develop cartoons using PBS KIDS ScratchJr.
MOVIE NIGHTS AT THE LIBRARY – Every Wednesday evening beginning promptly at 6 p.m. Free popcorn and beverages. The movies schedule is April 4 – “Ferdinand”; April 11 – “The Greatest Showman”; April 18 – “Paddington”; and April 25 – “Paddington 2.”
KNITTING CLUB – The Knitting Club meets two times a month on the second and fourth Fridays – April 13 and 27 – from 10 a.m. to noon. All skill levels are welcome.
WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? – Saturday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A unique story and activity class focused on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Daniel Tiger. The class will also be focusing on early literacy and this year’s PA One Book: “My Cousin Momo.” Every young child in attendance will receive a free copy of the book.
AFTER HOURS: A NIGHT FOR NEIGHBORS – Come dressed in your favorite cardigan! We will be honoring Mister Rogers on this evening with a little friendly cardigan competition from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 2. Who will win the funniest, or the warmest or the most Mister Rogers lookalike cardigan? Plus other categories.
BOWLBY ROCKS! – Patrons are invited to participate in the latest craze – painting rocks. The class will meet from noon to 2 p.m. April 21.This month’s theme: Flowers, insects and Mother’s Day. Bring two clean rocks with you to paint.
BOWLBY BOOK CLUB meets on the second Monday at 6 p.m. New members are always welcome. The next book discussion – April 9 – will be on Amor Towles’ book, “A Gentleman in Moscow.”
APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH – Enter the library’s annual Poetry Contest this month. Submit your poems between now and April 21. Then join the library for the Poetry Reading and Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. April 30, when the library will announce the winners from our poetry contest, and invite participants to read their original work. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
