Be Local when treating moms on Mother’s Day

By Frances Borsodi Zajac, For The Greene County Messenger 4 min read

Mother’s Day is a time to show appreciation for those important women in your lives who take on the responsibility of raising the next generation.

With a life that’s often stressful, mothers sometimes like to spend the day relaxing at home with loved ones around them.

But Be Local means consider treating those special mothers in your life to a day enjoying all that is available throughout the region.

“It’s nice for you and your mother to go out and explore recreational opportunities in your own backyard,” said JoAnne Marshall, director of Greene County Tourism Promotion Agency, who offered suggestions, such as a visit to Thistlewate Vineyards in Jefferson or taking in a Mother’s Day Tea Party on May 12, hosted by Fischer Antiques and 5 Kidz Kandy in Waynesburg.

Anna Weltz, director of public relations for Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, commented, “Now that spring has finally arrived, it’s a great time to treat Mom to a day in the Laurel Highlands. Perhaps a hike in Ohiopyle or a family bike along the Great Allegheny Passage. Or a leisurely brunch, then a tour of Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. But be sure to explore some of the charming shops and boutiques to find the perfect gift.”

“Washington County is the perfect place to spend time with your mother on Mother’s Day. I would start with a great brunch or lunch at one of our wonderful restaurants, such as SpringHouse, Bistecca, Palazzo 1837, Atria’s, Cannon’s Chophouse, Toscana or Angelo’s, or if she interested in something more unique, Fusion Japanese are always great choices. After, I would take her to one of our heritage sites, such as the Meadowcroft Rockshelter. And, after all that, I am sure a libation at J&D Cellars, Liberty Pole Spirits or Washington Brewery Company will be in order. Finally, I would end the day at Tanger Outlets and The Meadows Casino, which is a great way to thank the person who has always taken a chance on you,” said Jeff Kotula, president of Washington County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Promotion Agency.

When planning your special treat, as these tourism officials indicate, there are many possibilities.

Consider visiting any of a variety of restaurants throughout the readership area that are known for their delicious dishes and charming atmosphere.

Spas in the district offer pampering for those who are accustomed to pampering others.

You might want to visit a resort that also includes interesting pieces of art and activities, such as golf or tennis. In fact, golf courses and tennis courts are located throughout the region.

Maybe your mother would enjoy a picnic or hike in one of the area’s many community, state and national parks. Several include hike/bike trails, rafting and fishing.

Some feature history, such as the national parks that include Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Farmington, Friendship Hill National Historic Site in Springhill Township, both in Fayette County, and Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoneycreek Township, Somerset County.

History also abounds in local museums and can be seen in walks or drives through communities and highways that feature important historical markers, covered bridges and impressive sculptures.

Outdoor activities can include exploring Laurel Caverns or Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes such as Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Or spend time trying something new at a local winery or visiting a racetrack.

Indoor activities offer plenty of fun, such as movies, bowling and don’t forget area casinos.

There’s so many possibilities for a Mother’s Day treat. Consider making this year an extra special day for someone special in your life.
