Dorothy Laverna Troutman Kiger
Dorothy Laverna Troutman Kiger, of Mt. Morris, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, September 1, 2018, in Mapleshire Nursing Home, Morgantown.
Known as “Kiger,” “Aunt Dot,” “Ga Ga” and “Grams,” Dorothy was born October 15, 1923, to the late Victor and Lillie Belle Troutman. She was one of seven children.
She was preceded in death by her six siblings and her husband, Willis F. Kiger, whom she married January 2, 1942.
Dorothy lived in Mt. Morris for most of her adult life until her death.
Dorothy served in the Mt. Morris Post Office for 38 years, first as a postal clerk and eventual postmaster, where she retired in 1990. Upon retirement, she worked for the Joe R. Pyle Auction Service as a clerk.
She was a faithful member of the Mt. Morris Gospel Tabernacle until her health prevented her from attending regularly. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Women’s Ministries director and wherever the church needed help. She loved her Lord and one of the highlights of her life was traveling to the holy land.
She and Willis loved to travel and host dinner guests, especially guest speakers and pastors from church.
Dorothy loved to cook meals for her family, read, quilt and crochet. In her later years, one could walk into her house and find her watching the Food Network, Hallmark channel or TV preachers and Bill O’Reilly. She had quick wit and often would leave you laughing at her bluntness. Whenever you needed help, she was there for her family and anyone who knew her. She was a constant presence at all of her children and grandchildren’s games, concerts, recitals and meaningful events in their lives. She expressed her love by her presence and willingness to give.
Dorothy lived through 17 U.S. Presidents, the advent of television, computers and cellphones. She often would speak her mind on issues and wouldn’t hesitate to let you know how she felt, but deep down she had a giving heart and loved her family deeply.
Grams will be deeply missed as the matriarch of the family.
Mrs. Kiger is survived by three children, Wayne W. Kiger (Sandee) of Westover, West Virginia, Diana J. McIntire of Morgantown, West Virginia and James W. Kiger (Anita) of Dover, Deleware.
She had 10 grandchildren, Charlotte Pyle (Joe) of Mt. Morris, Kim Sanders (Dave) of Morgantown, Ted Kiger (Tracie) of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Tammy Mandich (Nick) of Washington, Lance McIntire of Morgantown, Steven McIntire (Rebecca) of Waynesburg, Zehra “Nikki” Anik (Husam) of Istanbul, Turkey, Ashley Stewart (Chris) of Annapolis, Md., Corrie Kiger of Dover and Jordan Kiger of Mt. Morris. She was also “Grams” to Aaron Hose (Miranda), Julie Greenaway (Matt), Leah Southard (Adam) and Kenneth Pennington (Kat).
She has 19 great-grandchildren, including extended family. She has numerous nephews and nieces from the Troutman family whom affectionately referred to her as “Aunt Dot.”
Lisa Lewis, Crystal Eddy, Amedysis Hospice and the staff of the Mapleshire Nursing Home provided care and compassion to Dorothy and her family during her illness.
The Owen-Neely Funeral Home in Blacksville, West Virginia was in charge of arrangements.
