Waynesburg church preps annual fundraising play

An eclectic cast of 11 is gearing up to perform in the 15th annual Mystery Dinner Theater at Waynesburg’s First Presbyterian Church this Saturday evening.
The night begins at 6:15 with appetizers. Guests can enjoy a meal prepared by Dan Wagner of the Career and Technology Center – complete with salad, an entree and dessert – while watching the cast perform “Capisce,” a play about a family of Mafiosi in Chicago.
The set mimics an Italian restaurant. Kathie Bortz, who’s been directing this annual event since its inception, said this year marks the 10th anniversary of “Capisce.”
“The play is performed in the style of old detective films and includes corruption, cynicism and situations stickier than overcooked pasta,” Bortz said.
Tickets cost $25 each and proceeds benefit the church’s mission trip fund, which brings aid to the Dominican Republic, Haiti and more. Bortz said some parishioners from First Presbyterian have gone on to become full time missionaries.
“It’s my heart string,” she said. “I love drama and I love missions.”
Chuck Harry of Waynesburg is one of the actors. This Oct. 25 play will be his first time acting and, though happy to be involved, he couldn’t deny his nerves.
“I’m having fun,” he said. “Excited might be a little strong of a word though.”
