Copperheads win Game 1 slugfest at Oakland, 16-12
Joe Chambers’ home run in the top of the fifth inning plated the deciding runs in Carmichaels’ 16-12 victory Sunday afternoon on the road at Oakland (Md.) in the opening game of the Fayette County Baseball League semifinals.
Game 2 in the best-of-3 series moved to Carmichaels High School on Monday.
Chambers’ blast brought home the final three runs in the four-run fifth inning to give Carmichaels a 13-7 lead at the time.
Oakland led 5-3 after three innings before Carmichaels exploded for six runs in the fourth inning. The Copperheads pieced together five walks and three hits for the big inning.
The Oaks scored five runs, four on Hunter Cottrell’s grand slam, in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Carmichaels’ lead to 14-12, but the visitors added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Liam Lohr benefitted from the two big innings for the win in relief of starting pitcher Andy Manion. Gavin Pratt picked up the final five outs for the save.
Pratt paced the Copperheads with four hits, including a solo home run in the third inning, and four runs scored. Noah Mildren finished with two doubles and Drake Long had three singles.
Chance Ritchy finished with three singles and Cottrell had two hits.
