Yellow Jackets lose heartbreaker at Thiel
Waynesburg University was in position to win its first game of the season Saturday afternoon at Thiel, but the Tomcats scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter and forced a turnover on the Yellow Jackets’ next possession for a 15-14 victory in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
Joseph Fell scored his second touchdown of the game from six yards out to give the home team a one-point lead with 2:08 left in the game.
Waynesburg (0-3, 0-5) drove to the Thiel 38 on the ensuing drive, but the Tomcats forced and recovered a fumble to take over at their own 47 with 1:09. Fell rushed for 4 yards on first down, 5 on second, was stopped for no gain on third, but moved the chains with one yard on fourth down before running out the clock.
Fell rushed for 122 yards on 26 carries. He was 13 of 28 for 141 yards but threw an interception in the second quarter that Brandon Tyson returned 41 yards for a touchdown with 36 seconds left before halftime and the Yellow Jackets took a 7-3 lead into the locker room.
Thiel (2-3, 2-3) regained the lead at 14:12 of the third quarter on Fell’s 52-yard run for a 9-6 advantage. The Tomcats attempted a two-point conversion, but Fell’s pass was incomplete.
Zayne Cawley’s 63-yard touchdown run put Waynesburg back in front, 14-9, with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter after Ricco Sastoque made his second PAT.
Cawley rushed for 103 yards on 15 carries.
Preston Lefkowitz’s 25-yard field goal at 10:18 of the second quarter provided Thiel with a 3-0 lead.
