Charleroi nips Lady Raiders, clinches section title

Bella Carroto’s last-minute goal tied the match and McKenna DeUnger’s goal in the final minute of overtime clinched Charleroi’s 3-2 Section 2-A victory Monday night at Waynesburg Central.

The Lady Cougars improve to 9-1-0 in the section and 12-1-0 overall. The Lady Raiders are 7-4-0 in the section and 10-4-0 overall.

Charleroi led 1-0 at halftime on Taylor Ramsdell’s goal set up by DeUnger.

Waynesburg rallied back for a 2-1 lead in the second half on goals from Rylie Rostoka and Ella Miller.

The 2-1 lead stood for 20 minutes until Carroto netted her 99th career goal.

Neither team was able to muster a goal in the first five-minute overtime period. Carroto’s 58th career assist set up DeUnger for her second goal of the game — and 92nd of her career — in the final minute of the second overtime.

Girls volleyball

Mapletown 3, Charleroi 1 — The Lady Maples returned home with a non-section victory.

Mapletown (9-4) won the first set, 25-10, and the final two, 25-15, 25-19. Charleroi took the second set, 25-19.

Mapletown had solid performances by Miranda Wise (9 kills, 7 blocks), Treslee Weston (8 kills), Bri Ashton (17 digs, 3 aces), Devan Clark (16 digs, 2 aces), and Bailey Rafferty (7 digs, 21 assists, 2 aces).

Thursday, Oct. 5

Carmichaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — The Lady Mikes won a close first set and used the momentum to roll to a sweep over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A girls volleyball action.

The Lady Mikes (5-5, 5-5) opened the match with a 27-25 win. The home team closed out the match with the scores, 25-18, 25-19.

Camryn Anderson (13 assists, 10 service points), Ani Cree (12 digs, 12 service points), and Pacey Pratt (13 kills, 15 digs) all had double-doubles for Carmichaels.

Chloe Mitchell finished with seven assists and 12 service points. Bailey Barnyak had seven kills and 11 digs. Payton Plavi had 12 service points.

Mapletown 3, Avella 0 — The Lady Maples rolled to a Section 2-A victory at Avella.

Mapletown (6-4, 8-4) swept to victory by the scores, 25-16, 25-20, 25-12.

Mapletown’s top performers were Isabella Garnek (10 kills), Treslee Weston (6 kills), Rowen Eisminger (5 kills), Devan Clark (10 digs, 4 aces), Bri Ashton (15 digs, 5 aces), and Bailey Rafferty (25 assists, 3 aces).

Boys soccer

Waynesburg Central 3, Southmoreland 1 — The Raiders scored two goals in the second half to rally for a Section 3-AA home victory.

Nick Willard set up Dominic George with the tying goal less than two minutes into the second half. Dalton Taylor’s penalty kick with 16:25 added an insurance goal for Waynesburg (4-8, 5-9)

Southmoreland (2-10, 3-11) scored first when Hunter Ryan found the back of the net at 9:34 in the first half.

Ryon McCartney, set up by Dylan Pester, tied the match five minutes later.

Waynesburg keeper Jobe McCartney made 10 saves. Southmoreland’s Jacob Seese stopped 10 shots.

Wednesday, Oct. 4

Waynesburg Central 5, Beth Center 2 — Lake Litwinovich scored two goals in the Lady Raiders’ Section 2-A girls soccer victory.

Brynn Kirby, Rylei Rastoka and Ella Miller scored one goal each for Waynesburg (7-3-0, 10-3-0). Beth-Center slips to 0-9-0 in the section and 0-11-0 overall.

Boys soccer

Waynesburg Central 2, Washington 1 — The Raiders scored two goals in the first half and keeper Nick Willard made the lead stand for a Section 3-AA road victory.

Dalton Taylor opened the scoring at 35:40 of the first half and then set up Ryon McCartney’s goal at 24:25.

Dylan Wudkwych scored for the Prexies with 8:23 left in the match.

Willard made 10 saves to preserve the victory.

Girls volleyball

Carmichaels 3, Geibel Catholic 0 — The Lady Mikes returned home with a Section 2-A victory over the Lady Gators.

Carmichaels (4-5, 4-5) swept to victory by the scores, 25-12, 25-11, 25-12.

Camryn Anderson (11 assists, 10 service points), Chloe Mitchell (10 assists, 12 service points), and Pacey Pratt (13 kills, 11 service points) all had double-doubles for the Lady Mikes. Ani Cree finished with 20 service points, including eight aces. Bailey Barnyak (3 aces, 7 kills, 5 digs) and Jovi Blasinsky (5 digs) also contributed to the road win.

Mapletown 3, California 2 — The Lady Maples won the final set for a Section 2-A home victory.

Mapletown won the first set, 25-18, and third set, 25-23. California rallied to tie the match twice with a 25-11 win in the second set and a tight 25-23 victory in the fourth set.

Mapletown (5-4, 7-4) secured the win by a 15-11 score in the fifth set.

Mapletown was led to victory by Treslee Weston (13 kills), Isabella Garnek (8 kills), Rowen Eisminger (8 kills, 8 digs), Bailey Rafferty (4 kills, 22 digs, 33 assists, 5 blocks), Devan Clark (3 kills, 27 digs, 3 aces), Bri Ashton (25 digs, 4 aces), Marley Seward (14 digs), Alexis Perry (11 digs), and Miranda Wise (5 blocks).

California received strong performances from Azzy Colditz (20 assists, 3 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks), Ava Bojtos (14 assists), Raegan Gillen (15 kills), Nina Conte (12 kills), Rakiyah Porter (13 digs, 3 kills, 4 aces), Mady Morton (8 blocks, 3 kills), Hayley Gibson (7 blocks), Sydney Dunn (3 blocks, 1 kill), Hannah Hull (4 digs), and Morgan Ross (16 service points, 2 aces).

Frazier 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — The Lady Commodores cruised to a three-set Section 2-A road victory at Jefferson-Morgan.

Frazier (9-0, 10-1) swept to victory by the scores, 25-15, 25-11, 25-17.

Frazier’s leaders were Maddie Salisbury (14 kills), Gracen Hartman (7 kills, 10 service points), Allie Monack (14 assists), Molly Yauch (8 digs, 17 service points), Addison Hiles (6 digs), Grace Vaughn (2 blocks), and Addison Schultz (2 blocks).
