New partnership to kick off the holiday season in Waynesburg

Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful will partner with Waynesburg-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company to host this year’s Holiday Open House and Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 1.
Sponsored by EQT Corp., the night kicks off the holiday season with a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, wagon rides, kids’ activities, music, shopping downtown and an outdoor holiday market. The event is in its 15 year, and the tree lighting ceremony takes center stage on the steps of the Greene County Courthouse.
“We are excited that the fire company is willing to work with us and help take the event to a higher level,” said Jeanine Henry, president of Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful. “This event continues to grow and is a tradition that our stores and attendees look forward to each year.” The fire company has been involved in many aspects of the event since its conception, from continuing to assist Greene County and the Waynesburg Moose Lodge with the Christmas tree lights to providing support in watching the burn barrels.
In 2020, the fire company offered its historic 1925 American LaFrance Fire Engine for photos with Santa. It continues to be a cherished photo for the community as the engine glistens under the Christmas tree lights.
“We look forward to taking a larger role in a tradition that brings happiness to so many in our community,” said Chief Jeff Marshall. “Our members and auxiliary members are already planning and hope to introduce new activities over the next few years.”
With the new partnership, the organizations are also seeking a new name for the event. The popular nickname coined by attendees, “Light Up Night,” is trademarked by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. If anyone has a suggestion, please email wbgholidayopenhouse@gmail.com or contact either organization on its Facebook page.
In conjunction with the Holiday Open House, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Greene County will hold its children’s winter coat and gear distribution. In addition, CASA joined Greene County United Way to create Candy Cane Lane on South Church Street with activities, displays and information for the community.
Greene County children under 18 are invited to stroll past Candy Cane Lane to the CASA office during the event. No appointment or RSVP is needed. For more information or to donate new and gently used children’s boots, clothing and gear, visit greenecountycasa.org.
