Football roundup: Rockets, Pioneers win to clinch playoffs spots

Deakyn Dehoet scored four touchdowns and Jefferson-Morgan put up all the points it needed in the first quarter during a 46-12 Tri-County South Conference victory over visiting Monessen last Friday night.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-1, 5-3), which clinched a playoff spot with the victory, led 16-6, 22-12 and 38-12 at the quarter breaks.

The Rockets’ Houston Guesman completed all eight of his pass attempts for 206 yards and three touchdowns, all to Dehoet, who also returned a kickoff 79 yards for a score. Guesman added 31 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Dehoet caught six passes for 192 yards. Colin Bisceglia finished with 107 yards rushing and John Woodward ran for 41 yards and a touchdown for the Rockets.

Jefferson-Morgan was five for six on 2-point conversion attempts with Woodward accounting for two and Dehoet, Guesman and Biscegllia converting one apiece.

Both of Monessen’s touchdowns came on kickoff returns by Tim Kershaw of 86 yards and Tyvaughn Kershaw of 82 yards. Despite the loss, the Greyhounds (1-4, 2-5) remain alive for a playoff spot.

West Greene 37, Beth-Center 12 — The Pioneers scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to secure a Tri-County South Conference road win over the Bulldogs in a battle of second-place teams.

West Greene remains in a tie with Jefferson-Morgan, one game behind first-place California, while Beth-Center drops into sole possession of fourth place. The win also clinched a playoff spot for the Pioneers.

West Greene’s Colin Brady opened the game by returning the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown.

Johnny Lampe scored the next two touchdowns on short scoring runs for the Pioneers (4-1, 6-2).

Beth-Center’s Jonah Sussman scored the only touchdown in the third quarter on a 3-yard run.

Lampe came through in the fourth quarter with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Parker Burns and a 4-yard scoring run. Billy Whitlach ran for 140 yards on 17 carries.

Ethan Varesko scored on a 14-yard run for the Bulldogs (3-2, 3-5) in the fourth quarter. Varesko finished with 76 yards rushing.

Mapletown 38, Bentworth 36 — The Maples edged visiting Bentworth for a Tri-County South Conference victory, snapping a five-game losing streak and keeping their playoff hopes mathematically alive.

Mapletown (1-4, 3-5) outscored Bentworth in the second half, 16-14, for the final point spread.

Bentworth’s Vitali Daniels threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Burt with 5:35 left in the game. Burt caught five passes for 127 yards.

The Maples’ Evan Griffin scored on a 3-yard run just over a minute earlier. Griffin ran for 134 yards on 16 carries.

Daniels had a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:27 to go in the third quarter. Mapletown needed only 13 seconds to answer on AJ Vanata’s 61-yard touchdown pass to Brock Evans.

The teams were tied at halftime, 22-22.

Daniels had two touchdown passes and Benjamin Luketich scored on a 4-yard run in the first half for Bentworth (1-4, 2-6). Daniels ran for 126 yards and threw for 163 yards.

Evans ran for two touchdowns and Vanata scored on one in the first half for the Maples. Vanata completed six passes for 141 yards. Evans had three receptions for 78 yards.

Bentworth amassed 476 total yards of offense, while Mapletown had 412 total yards.

The Bearcats also remain in playoff contention despite the loss.

California 58, Carmichaels 13 — The first-place Trojans led 38-7 at halftime and didn’t look back for a Tri-County South Conference road victory.

Spence Petrucci had touchdown runs of 35 and 22 yards for California (5-0, 7-1), and finished with 200 yards rushing on 22 carries.

Jake Layhue had a pair of short touchdown runs for the Trojans. Lee Qualk scored on a 20-yard run, and Malachi Peak and Landon Abercrombie had touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.

A.J. Donaldson tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ambrose Adamson in the third quarter for the Mikes (1-4, 2-6) and Billy White closed the scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
