As Greene County looks to add new business development to Progress Drive in Waynesburg, it’s also trying to make sure the road bearing the increased traffic will provide a smooth ride.

At their Thursday meeting, the commissioners approved an application to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for a Multimodal Transportation Fund grant of almost $1.9 million for road improvements on Progress Drive.

The work will include repaving, widening and subsurface work.

The road is in decent shape, board Chairman Jared Edgreen said. However, it’s seeing more use with the development of the Evergreene Technology Park,

“There’s much heavier traffic on it with truck traffic, so we need to get ahead of it,” he said. “It’s crumbling in some places, (and) needs to be widened.”

In April, the county also received a $350,000 grant toward a redevelopment project on Progress Drive aimed at readying the sites for new construction and making offsite improvements along the Route 21 corridor.

Aside from a short roadway leading to the Greene County Airport, Progress Drive is the only road owned by Greene County, Edgreen said.

Notice of whether the grant is approved could come as soon as this fall, county Clerk Jeff Marshall said.

If the county’s application is successful, it would plan to make the roadway improvements next year, Marshall said.
